Prior’s Haven in 1849
Tynemouth from Prior’s Haven as it Appeared in 1849 – John Storey (1878)
A real chocolate box piece with two Fry boats in the bay, covered to provide privacy to bathers. Before the railways arrived in the 1850s, the Haven, not the Longsands, was Tynemouth’s main beach, as tourists arrived here by boat. The building with the chimney at the bottom of the Castle banks is the extremely popular hot and cold saltwater baths.
